NVIDIA agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion

NVIDIA plans to acquire Hugging Face, the AI platform hosting millions of models and serving a large global developer and enterprise community. The deal could bring model discovery, hosting, evaluation, and inference infrastructure closer to NVIDIA’s ecosystem while Hugging Face is expected to maintain support for different models and platforms.

NVIDIA plans to acquire Hugging Face, whose platform hosts more than three million models and is used by over 200,000 companies. NVIDIA says Hugging Face will remain open to different models, clouds, frameworks and accelerators, without requiring NVIDIA hardware. NVIDIA — 3 September 2026

  • What changed: A central distribution and deployment platform for open models is moving under the leading AI-chip supplier.
  • Why it matters: Model discovery, evaluation, hosting and inference infrastructure could become more tightly integrated—but hardware and platform neutrality warrant continued scrutiny.
  • Practical takeaway: Keep model artifacts in portable formats and place inference behind an application-owned interface so RAG services can move between Hugging Face, Foundry and self-hosted endpoints.
  • Analysis: NVIDIA has promised neutrality; architecture decisions should nevertheless avoid assuming every current provider and accelerator option will remain equally supported.
