Global payment processor Adyen plans to expand its Indian operations while adapting its platform for UPI, recurring mandates, cross-border transactions and data-localisation requirements. It is also preparing for agentic commerce, where AI agents could search for products and complete limited transactions on a customer’s behalf.
What changed
Since receiving Indian payment-aggregator and cross-border licences in 2024, Adyen’s local workforce has increased tenfold to approximately 120 employees.
Why it matters
An AI-initiated transaction requires user intent, regulatory consent and payment authorization to be independently verifiable.
Practical takeaway
In payment flows such as your Visma Pay integration, store InitiatedBy = User | Agent, the spending limit, consent reference and final human-confirmation status.
Analysis
Agentic payments remain an emerging field in India. Adoption will depend on NPCI’s proposed framework and the limits imposed by regulators.
